Add New Hardware

The Add New Hardware Wizard remain the same as in Windows 95 except for one addition. Prior to the full system scan, it now performs a fast check for plus and play devices. A list of any new devices found with this check is shown and if the hardware you are looking to add is in this list, you can choose it and install it from there. The reason for this addition is that peripherals attached to, say, the PCI slots can be detected in a matter of seconds so there is no need to make users sit through the long full system scan if they are only looking to add a new PCI card. In truth Windows 98, like Windows 95, should detect new plug and play devices as Windows starts the first time after it has been added and automatically install it. In fact with USB and IEEE 1394 devices, the devices should be automatically detected if they are plugged in while the system is on.

If the device you want to add is in the list, you click on it (or them) and select Next. If not, you Click on "No, the device is not in the list" and then on Next and you will jump to the old style Wizard where you can either perform a full system scan to see if Windows can find the device automatically, or choose to install the device yourself manually. There is however no way to do this without performing the quick check first. See also Display (Advanced), Hardware, Modems, Update Driver Uninstall, Windows Driver Model, Game Controllers
